Ground Anchors

Over the past 50 years, fully threaded, high strength threaded bar and multi-strand anchor systems with corrosion protection have developed into the most accepted and highly reliable ground anchorages available. Skyline Steel offers the most advanced multi-strand ground anchor technology available in the geotechnical industry in the United States. In addition to traditional multi-strand PTI Class I permanent and Class II temporary strand anchors, we have the world’s most convenient and widely used removable strand anchor system.

Manufactured in the United States with domestic strand, heads and wedges, we supply the required jacking systems and the technical field support to allow contractors to economically use this technology. Already proven on commercial projects in the United States, a full scale experimental and theoretical evaluation of the system has been conducted in accordance with US standards by one of the geotechnical industries’ most respected independent consulting engineering firms at a location administered by an American university. This information is available to all, along with the technical support required for use of the system.

Tie Rods

Tie rods can be used in conjunction with a typical sheet pile retaining system to provide additional support and stability for walls that may be too high to be cantilevered. The use of Skyline Steel threaded bar enables the user to optimize their design by increasing wall stability, decreasing sheet pile length, and reducing the wall design moment.

Tie rod systems typically contain three parts: a waler, a threaded bar, and an anchoring system. The waler is designed to distribute the anchor load evenly across the sheet pile wall and provide a point of attachment for the threaded bar. The threaded bar distributes the load from the main wall to an anchor system. Anchor systems can be designed as a deadman wall, an individual anchor pile, a concrete block, or the bar may also be grouted into soil or rock as ground anchorage. Skyline Steel threaded bars and fasteners have been designed and tested to exceed the minimum tensile strengths of the various bar sizes we offer.

Soil Nails

Soil nails are bars installed within an excavation or slope to provide reinforcement to an earth retention structure. They differ from tie backs in that they are considered passive elements and are not actively loaded in tension like a prestressed ground anchor. Soil nails are used in combination with a steel grid cover and shotcrete. As a system, the soil nail, grid cover, and shotcrete act as a coherent mass with enough strength to resist the overburden pressure of the surrounding soil mass, as well as any surcharge pressure.

In comparison to tie back anchors, soil nails have a few significant benefits. The equipment required to install soil nails is relatively small and mobile, providing a distinct advantage for applications with tight spaces or noise control issues. Using soil nails is typically a more flexible construction technique, allowing for simpler on-site modifications. Also, soil nails are installed early on in the construction process, limiting the disturbance on adjacent structures.
